Airport calls for restrictions on bird keeping

Nine pigeons were found dead and they were identified as those kept by a villager living three kilometers away from a runway in the western part of the airfield. The airport says the top “enemies” of the airport need to be kept away from the area and related departments should have more restrictions in place as soon as possible not only for the safety of the planes but for the birds as well. But the local pigeon association responded that prohibiting the raising of pigeons in the area cannot ensure the safety of the planes 100 percent for even pigeons far away from the area may lose their way and end up there. Since 1997 more than 10 municipal and provincial governments such as Guiyang Chongqing Sichun and Nanjing have introduced rules and regulations to control and administer the keeping and setting free of birds near airports an airport manager says… Nine pigeons were found dead and they were identified as those kept by a villager living three kilometers away from a runway in the western part of the airfield. According to the Beijing government the Chinese capital doesn’t have similar regulations. Xia Xueluan a sociology professor with Peking University thinks Beijing needs local regulations to ensure the safety of flights at Beijing Capital Airport. Though it is a sport for the residents nearby to keep carrier pigeons it is not a private activity when it affects the safety of the public.
The race is on
Boston Globe – Jun 21, 2007
The Plymouth Racing Pigeon Club proved to have the fastest birds in this race (varying distances to the birds’ home lofts were factored in to the rankings). Four pigeons belonging to Aldo and Jeff Morini of Kingston took first second third and fourth place. The birds from the Braintree Racing Pigeon Club performed well with two of them finishing in the top 10. The fastest bird from the Braintree club owned by Kevin Williams ranked seventh place overall. Typically pigeons will race nonstop on trips less than 300 miles and make one stop for a drink on longer races. “It’s the end of the race for the birds when they return to loft” Hultman said. “It’s the end for the guys when they find out the results and we figure out who won.
Time will tell as Cleator Moor bird wins from Le Mans
Whitehaven News – Jun 21, 2007
?That?s how he got his name? recalls Brian looking back to 2004 when their chequer cock won the Federation from Falaise crossing the channel for the first time as a yearling. ?That?s when one of the lads in the club said the pigeon would never be dangerous again! My dad just said ?Time will tell? and the name has sort of stuck. ?He?s had some good positions since then but I suppose he?s really lived up to his name this week-end? says Brian. Now a four-year-old the pigeon was flying on the roundabout system but paired to the loft?s fantail. ?He?s flown virtually every week apart from the last inland one before the first channel race. ?We sent him to Falaise but he was a bit behind about 12 hours on the wing but he was absolutely bouncing which made us decide to send him again a fortnight later… We?ve heard he?s high up in the Combine this time as well. ?He?s also been sixth club from Sartilly in 2005 and 18th Fed from Lessay last year? says Brian. The winning bird is bred off a blue cock an Alf Rothwell Busschaert and a chequer hen a Van den Bosche from Dougie Graham of Workington. The Cleator Moor father-and-son partnership sent six pigeons to Le Mans ? which is around 475 miles ? and got five of them three on the night and two next day. The Cumbria Combine birds were held until Sunday because of bad weather and were liberated at 6am. The Fitzsimmons winner was clocked at 4.
