If pooh is good luck then I should have won the lottery on Wednesday night after standing in one of the larger piles of dog crap at the first Springbok training session in Bloemfontein on Monday. It was as big as the Reserve Bank Governor softer than the Presidency’s policy towards Zimbabwe and smelt worse than my fridge after two days of Eskom folly. Washing my left Nike Pegasus under a tap at the side of Shimlas’ ground at the University of the Free State did mean that I missed part of one of the more intense Springbok practice sessions seen in a while. There were more big hits than a Rolling Stone concert but the physicality was married with clear and precise thinking: it was as close to poetry as assault and battery could get.

And while the fit and well-outfitted can explore plenty of steep mountain trails to isolated spots ? and stay at backcountry shelters and campsites ? there’s also much along the 1360 kilometres of well-maintained paths to attract hikers and walkers of all levels. Certain areas are open to cyclists although not many and there’s a horseback riding stable with guided rides. Anxious to explore the park and reluctant to endure the mini-Vegas sensibilities of gateway tourist towns like Pigeon Forge and its smaller cousin Gatlinburg I decided to make the town of Townsend my base. Dubbed "the peaceful side of the Smokies" it’s a short drive and a world away from the flashing lights and mini-golf Dollywood dinner theatres and panning-for-gold hucksterism of Pigeon Forge and the cheek-by-jowl motels of Gatlinburg. With a population hovering around 250 the sleepy town on the Smokies’ doorstep has a few reasonably priced places to stay and eat some small artisan shops a dulcimer-maker (a traditional mountain musical instrument) an art gallery and a great coffee shop called Thunderhead Perk. Fortified in mountain fashion with a breakfast of salt-cured smoked country ham and warm biscuits with homemade apple butter a day of hiking seemed like a smart move… Some loop others are out and back. All are easy trails and with room for only a handful of cars to park at the base some solitude is assured. I picked up one walkway and found the traffic noise disappeared almost immediately replaced by bird calls a sense of peace and the damp fresh smells of the forest. Later I hiked a popular paved path up to Laurel Falls a five-kilometre round trip that was steep in spots but not difficult. Self-guided nature trails also get people into the park. Most are short and have a guidepost signs along the trail or a $1 map booklet for sale at an honour box at the start. Some are wheelchair accessible.

Is the dog OK?Posted By: news2me | June 06 2008 at 03:07 PMThis sounds like SUCH a bad idea. But then I am not an “artiste” with creative vision. Posted By: chatterbox | June 06 2008 at 03:12 PMI had a pigeon crap on my shoulder down my arm and leg at the Tower of London. Man I wish somebody’d caught THAT on video. Posted By: heyheypaula | June 06 2008 at 03:13 PMfirst the blitzkrieg and now this. hasn’t london suffered enough. Posted By: darth_geekboy | June 06 2008 at 03:19 PMI wonder if she’ll be wearing underwear?Posted By: hawaiian | June 06 2008 at 03:21 PMGet the air sirens ready… “Only a white man would be dumb enough to go there!!!” yelled a third. Still the Curious Little Disher had to see what life was like in the land of “wealthy loving. ” So he typed in the name of the website and as soon as it opened up his computer was overtaken by the Taiwanese bird flu his mouse got lead poisoning his skin broke out in boils and the spirit of an evil Russian princess came and stole his sense of humor and locked it up in garret in a mountaintop castle in Transylvania where Hannah Montana songs play around the clock. The EndPosted By: news2me | June 06 2008 at 05:55 PMThank you news.
