But in a 2-1 victory over Tigre his identity was irrecoverably linked with his deed. He delivered a low shot toward the right corner of the field and suddenly there was a flash of feathers. A pigeon was propelled about 20 feet and landed with a thud. It twitched for a few moments. Everyone waited because this being a soccer-loving bird there was a chance it would spring to life good as new as soon as the offender was issued a yellow card. The pigeon expired on the pitch and a referee chucked it off the field so the game could resume.

“That is one of the fastest birds in the world” Dave Bengston said. Bengston is Mendocino County’s agricultural commissioner and also a bird watcher. The fast bird he had spotted was a Peregrine Falcon also known as a pigeon hawk. The Peregrine Falcon Bengston said eats all other birds. If you have ever seen shorebirds panic at the beach with no dogs around it is likely a Peregrine Falcon causing the stir Bengston said. The area surveyed by the group Saturday morning was on Granite Construction’s yard. Some birds were counted on trees and bushes beyond the fence.

The bird world is awash with species and families that have evolved special adaptations that allow incredible vision under a wide range of conditions. Thus a duck is able to see well both atop the water and when diving beneath the surface. A falcon’s amazing binocular vision helps it to stay focused on a dodging pigeon while dive-bombing at 200 mph. A hawk’s broad visual spectrum allows it to see even the urine trails of mice in a farm field.

Several turkey vultures crows and hawks had been sighted in the past hour but the hawks paid the pigeon only a passing glance. A resident red-tailed hawk flew over the area and alighted in a nearby tree. The local bird had seen this pigeon ploy before and was probably more interested in guarding his territory from other hawks than pouncing on the pigeon. After 10 minutes Striediek exited the blind and chased away the pesky hawk. Earlier that morning another redtail had approached the pigeon but apparently suspected that something was amiss and veered off at the last second. • • • Now this eager hawk was coming in or so it seemed.
