The sad story of Red Robbo and the sparrow hawk
Daelnet UK
What brings this incident to mind is an article in the current issue of Bird Table the magazine of the British Trust for Ornithology?s Garden BirdWatch scheme which describes the massive comeback of the sparrow hawk which says writer Mike Toms ?was effectively extinct in many parts of its British range just a few decades ago. ?Now it is making itself rather unpopular by raiding bird tables in private gardens ? often to the distress of the caring householders and their children. There is also a growing clamour from racing pigeon owners who want laws protecting this wonderful bird lifted so that it can be shot. Every time a homing pigeon fails to return it seems to me this particular set of bird lovers blame the sparrow hawk. Now this leaves me in something of a personal dilemma. I have doubts whether a sparrow hawk could in fact bring down a fully grown and presumably fit racing pigeon but there is no doubt that they are beginning to patrol bird tables and areas where householders put out bird feeders: I see it happening regularly. And although I miss Red Robbo I would hate to see a new wave of persecution of the hawks.

Environmental groups worried about bird declines as 50th bird …

css(”width”new String(w+”px”)); } By: David Suzuki FoundationEnvironmental groups are predicting that the 50th anniversary of Victoria?s Christmas Bird Count Circle on December 20th will produce results that are anything but golden as a lack of habitat protection in BC continues to harm bird populations. Environmental lawyer Sean Nixon of Ecojustice formerly Sierra Legal Defence Fund said the BC government needs to introduce its own standalone endangered species legislation to help conserve vanishing habitat like the Garry Oak ecosystems near Victoria that support a wealth of at-risk birds including the critically imperiled coastal vesper sparrow. ?The volunteers who scour Victoria to count these birds are marking a milestone this year. Unfortunately they will likely find record low numbers of many bird species as BC?s natural spaces continue to be lost or fragmented? said Nixon. The volunteer-led count is one of the most reliable indicators of bird population changes in the Victoria area as close to 200 volunteers monitor bird activity within a 24-kilometre-diameter circle.

Well there may be something in this and it is worth a try however it is the same old story WHO is going to take the lead maybe the RPRA or the Confederation can take up this challenge. Kingslea One Loft Race Received an email from Ian McKay who organises the Kingslea one loft race; he had been speaking to Robbie Higgins of Fraserburgh about the 2009 pigeon race I hold with some rather good prize money. Robbie has told me to enter one bird in the race in the name of Westfield School from Fraserburgh. This bird will belong to the children of Westfield school during the young bird race season of 2009. This bird will be fully paid for by Robbie Higgins and all money won will be paid to Westfield school for you to spend as they please. Ian has sent information on how the race is run to the school head master for her perusal assuring her they will have nothing to do. Because this is a generous offer by Robbie Ian will send her a photograph of the bird bred in the year 2009 for the children to seeand give it a name if they wish.
