This isn’t to say that Willems’ stories are violent. n the contrary even by children’s publishing standards these are extraordinarily gentle books. The plots involve straightforward resolutely unfrightening conflicts; in “There Is a Bird on Your Head!” Elephant Gerald must deal with a bird building a nest on his head; in “I Am Invited to a Party!” Piggie gets a party invitation and she must figure out (with Gerald’s help) what she should wear. Even something like Don’t Let the Pigeon Drive the Bus! the title of which at least suggests the possibility of car chases and crashes in the event involves nothing more hair-raising than a small bird throwing a tantrum. It’s quite a tantrum though. The pigeon really really wants to drive the bus. After begging and pleading with the reader to give him a chance (“My cousin Herb drives a bus almost every day!” “How ‘bout I give you five bucks?”) the insistent bird has a full-page fit hopping up and down shouting to the sky and flipping over onto its back in an explosion of motion lines that culminates with it’s head turned around three-hundred sixty degrees it’s eye inflamed and bulging red and it’s wings flapping in a multiplied blur shedding feathers like drops of sweat.

The mostly one-pitch routes are marked and graded now in a route guide with photographs — and the potential abounds for many more lines to be opened. The Magaliesberg has many outdoor options for Thaba Phuti guests. Hot-air-balloon and elephant rides and canopy tours are among the more unusual options while freshwater fishing clay-pigeon shooting wine tasting and golf are also on offer. And if you want to do nothing the stylish rooms with en-suite bathrooms are an attractive refuge. A spacious lounge with the Phuti cocktail bar and fireplace and the pool deck are also ideal for reading and relaxing. If you’re on a safari mission you would be better off driving to a Big 5 game park but if you’re looking for a luxury retreat from Jo’burg then Thaba Phuti is a perfect option. Local attraction Canopy gliding: If you want to see a Magaliesberg gorge from a black eagle’s point of view (and they do nest there) climb into a full body harness and hurtle along steel cables far above the trees and streams.
