Terry Sandham met with opposition after constructing the 18ft by 5ft loft off green belt land at Guiseley. The bird house which was built in 2007 was granted permission after he applied retrospectively but he appealed against the extra costs incurred in hiring a solicitor and paying for landscaping. Now Mr Sandham has been awarded his legal costs ? which could reach £20000 ? back from Leeds City Council after an appeal to the Local Government Ins-pector. The report from the Local Government Inspector said: ?I find that unreasonable behaviour resulting in uneccessary expenses has been determined. ?I conclude that an award of partial costs is justified excluding costs in relation to the landscaping. ? Mr Sandham 68 who built the loft to replace an existing bird house on green belt off The Poplars said he was glad the ?sorry saga? was finally over.

When I would see a flock of birds sitting on a lawn or on the sidewalk I would make noises at them and move toward them just enough to make them all take off. The bigger the flock the better. Any kind of bird would do except one–pigeons. Pigeons in the city wouldn’t budge unless somebody actually touched them. I wouldn’t have done that. Kicking pigeons would’ve gotten me into trouble. I was forcing a false choice on the birds: fly or be stomped eaten or otherwise dispatched.

She has owned several pigeons with the most famous being ‘White Top’ a blue pied hen bred by Tommy Gilbertson of Carlisle and she appeared on television three times with ‘bad boy’ before being lost in a bad channel race. Her current pigeon is the Haelterman gay pied hen ‘Sasha’s Beauty’ which was a special gift to her from ‘bad boy’s’ friends Ced and Clive Allwright of Ashford and as a yearling in 2008 she flew well through to Bergerac (450 miles). Her nest sister is the Allwright’s good blue hen ‘Amy winner of 9th open NFC Guernsey and lifted ‘The Vera Allwright Memorial Cup’ as a young bird in 2007. She lives in a flat in Cobham and although there has been a lot of talk over the last few years about her having a pair of pigeons in a small flight on the balcony it’s not really an option.
