Nature Scenes ‘” Birds’ wonderful eyes
The DeLand-Deltona Beacon
‘>Lynn BowenBEACN CLUMNISTposted Apr 5 2009 – 10:35:16amHave you ever wondered why birds’ eyes are placed where they are? Nature has adapted each bird with special eye features that are quite different from humans’. Most birds’ eyes are so large that there is no room left to rotate them so the birds must turn their heads frequently to align their field of vision. Also they can focus their eyes rapidly which is important in flight and when diving underwater. Birds gain more information through their eyes than all their other sensory organs together. Their eyes can detect direction distance size shape brightness color hue and intensity depth and motion of an object all in a superior way to what human eyes can do.

The pigeon was caught resting on a wire somewhere near or within the prison farm with a small cloth bag tied around its leg. The guards used some food to draw it to them and then they captured the bird and bag. Inside the bag were the components for a cell phone. A second bird was caught a day later with a similar bag and this time the bird made its way into the prison exercise yard. His bag contained the cell phone charger. The birds are believed to have been raised inside the prison and somehow smuggled out outfitted and sent back to the prison.

”The bedrock of their offensive is the Bird-X BroadBand PR an automated system utilizing the calls of natural bird predators to discourage birds from entering the transfer station. “The BroadBand PR randomly plays back sounds that are pre-programmed into the device” said Richer. “You can select various bird distress sounds or predator sounds like falcon or hawk calls that cause the pigeons to vacate the area. ”According to a statement released by Waste Management’s public relations company Aqua Communications the automated sound system uses four loudspeakers covering over 10000 sq. to accurately emulate the calls of other birds and bird predators. The system emits roughly eight different predator calls randomly over the course of the day or from 7am to 6pm.
