Ask About Urban Wildlife

while I see them eat I never see them drink. do squirrels drink or do they get their water requirements from their food as some desert rodents do? — Don 2. June 22 2009 8:31 am Link Do you approve of the USDA parks department and NYC Mayor’s plan to murder thousands of Canadian Geese? Do you believe that resident geese in our parks are responsible for bringing down planes? And do you believe it is better to murder all Canadian Geese than to intelligently plan the routes of planes to avoid migratory birds? If all the geese are killed do you think there are other bird species that also need to be killed? Where would you draw the line if anywhere at killing wildlife to protect plane routes rather than intelligently re-routing planes? Are there any birds that you would not support killing?Have you expressed your opinions on murdering all geese to the USDA the mayor or anyone else? If so to whom have you communicated either you support or criticism of the murders? — rac 3. June 22 2009 8:47 am Link I just read about the bald eagle reintroduction initiative in Inwood Hill Park which apparently started in the summer of 2004. I’ve recently moved to Inwood and have walked through the upper elevations of the park but I’ve yet to see any eagles. How is the program going and are the eagles in residence? — TomS 4. Most races are from 100 to 600 air miles. A race starts when all the birds are transported to a specific site and released together. That information will indicate the distance covered and flight time can be calculated from those figures. Birds must be released at sunrise to give them the opportunity to fly during the day Jones said. “The pigeons won’t fly in the dark” he explained. “They’ll roost somewhere to sleep at night.
Answer Man: ‘Jaywalking’ and other bird-brained behavior

Joseph which he alludes to as a ‘jay’ town of the worst description” someone wrote in an 1899 edition of the San Francisco Evening Bulletin. So here’s how I see one of the first incidents of road rage: It’s about 1915 and someone’s racing along at 10 mph in his Tin Lizzie. Suddenly some bird-brained pedestrian fresh off the farm walks across the middle of the street oblivious to the traffic. The driver slams on his brakes and trying to think of a fitting insult yells “You jaywalker!”No that’s not exactly how the term was born but most wordsmiths think it’s probably pretty close as people started coining new words and phrases for the automobile age — e. “joy ride” “rumble seat” and “step on the gas. ” Mixing “jay” and “walker” seems particular apt both for its previous tie to hillbillies who don’t know how to act in the city and because the bird does seem to hop in an erratic manner much like the unpredictable path of a jaywalker.

Races are as long as 300 miles a distance from which trained homing pigeons can find still their way home. The price to enter a bird in the competition is $125. Pigeon racing — and pigeons themselves — are not well understood Desmarais said. Pigeons he said don’t carry diseases that can be transmitted to humans and don’t eat worms or bugs. They eat seeds or fruit and in urban areas eat food and crumbs dropped by humans. Carrier pigeons were used to carry messages before postal mail and some even were given awards for their service in both world wars he added.
Weekend Thrifting: Spinning Bird Kick

“But I had this when I was a kid. ”Leaving the store I took the Chun Li out of my bag to reminisce about how truly godawful these figures were. Just at that moment a bird kicked me in the head. You cannot make this stuff up. This weekend of thrift store scavenging was a high-volume one — I ended up carrying around two bags full of junk by the time I finally got home. I think I may have that disease where you compulsively buy things.

Two crew members were called out by the RSPCA to help the bird after members of the public had seen it become trapped in the net on the roof of a building in Hampden Court in the Kingsmead Business Park. Crew members used a turntable ladder to free the bird uninjured at about 2pm. Fraser Pearson a spokesman for the fire service said he estimated the cost of the call-out to be about £100.
