How should feral cats be managed?

However despite the large number of feral cats humans have caused a much bigger impact on bird populations. Humans are the only species who have been documented to actually cause the extinction of another species. We have hunted Passenger Pigeons and Dodos into extinction. The use of pesticides almost caused the extinction of the Bald Eagle our national bird. However habitat destruction is the leading cause of bird population decline. As birds struggle to find places to eat live and rear their young humans continue to destroy forests meadows and wetlands. While it is true that feral cat populations should be managed eliminating all feral cats would not stop the decline of bird populations.

Male Anna’s Hummingbirds were recorded as flying 385 body lengths a second in a courtship designed to woo the females. And when the colourful birds pull out of their dive they endure nearly 10G or 10 times gravity a force which can make fighter pilots black out and go blind. The bird is thought to stay conscious despite the formidable gravitational pull partly because it has a much shorter circulatory system than a human. When the birds reach top speed their tail feathers make a loud noise thought to impress females. The stunning aerobatic displays of the red-crowned bird found between Arizona and British Columbia were revealed by Christopher Clark of the University of California Berkeley’s Museum of Vertebrate Zoology in Proceedings of the Royal Society B: Biological Sciences journal. He said: “The average maximum speed of 385 body lengths per second sets a new record for maximum length specific speed by a vertebrate.
