The City Council hires Bird Busters to install netting beneath the pier to catch pigeon droppings and other debris that otherwise would pollute the water. By Martha Groves July 30 2009Pigeons fouling up your coastal waters? Who you gonna call? Bird Busters. Santa Monica’s City Council voted unanimously Tuesday to hire Bird Busters to install netting under the Santa Monica Pier to reduce bacterial pollution caused by pigeon droppings and other debris. Concerned about bacterial contamination near the pier the city teamed up with Heal the Bay to identify the source; pigeon feces were determined to be the likely cause. In 2008 a consulting firm suggested netting as one of the most effective ways to keep birds from roosting in areas where they’re not wanted.
Santa Monica may install net under pier to catch bird droppings
Los Angeles Times
The Santa Monica Daily Press has more:The City Council tonight is expected to approve a $107758 contract with Bird Busters to install a net directly beneath the Santa Monica Pier where pigeons roost and frequently defecate creating challenges for City Hall to meet bacterial levels set forth by the Los Angeles Regional Water Quality Control Board. City officials said they believe that installing the net and thereby eliminating the roosting sites beneath the pier will reduce bacteria pollution caused from pigeon feces. A consultant hired last year to evaluate various projects that would keep bacteria levels below the board's requirements identified netting as the most effective solution for deterring birds.
Why we feed

Yes I know that butterflies are not birds but by planting host plants we are helping to supply a summer’s worth of caterpillars for our backyard’s baby birds. Beautiful butterflies are the fringe benefits of creating a diverse and rich habitat. Nobody really knows how many U. bird watchers and feeders there are. The only big study was done in conjunction with the last census. That study estimated 65 million identified themselves as bird watchers.

Dove hunting with this many birds will fool you into thinking you are a better shot than you really are. The reason being that unlike our hunts in the U. there are so many birds that you don’t even bother to take the difficult shots.

“Typically they may settle on someone’s roof and scratch around a bit” he said. “I’ve seen some stay during the winter but most of them do migrate south. “John Castrale Indiana Department of Natural Resources nongame bird biologist said once the birds find an area they like they will keep coming back. “They like places where they feel safe so they sometimes end up in these more urban environments” he said. Castrale said that while the birds are scavengers they don’t pose a threat to people or pets. “They’re more of an annoyance than anything else” he said. “They like to pick at people’s shingles and they can leave quite a few droppings but that’s about it.
What’s a bird worth?

In addition to the birds police confiscated $8000 in cash so the gambling involved wasn’t trivial. According to the story “Canaries which have a general reputation for being sweet songbirds are known to fight with each other particularly during the breeding season. Songbirds aren’t exempt from the nature-red-in-tooth-and-claw thing: nce while camping at an klahoma state park I watched a couple of tufted titmice chase each other all around a big oak until one of them fell to the ground dead its skull crushed by hammer blows from the other bird’s beak. But of course the Connecticut ring had nothing to do with nature and everything to do with cruel human beings who thankfully now are out of business and facing fines and jail time.
