Can you give us some info on this bird?”I talked to Gerry Smith president of the nondaga Audubon Society. He said the bird is most likely a lost racing pigeon. “This is prime time for pigeon races. They’re used to being handled and fed by people” he said. “It’s just trying to figure out where it’s supposed to be. Smith said usually when a racing pigeon loses its ability to find its way home it’s no longer of any use to its owner.

The bird’s handler Steve Schwartze who owns Falcon Ecosystem Solutions based in Lethbridge Alta. said he realized the time had come for the bird to really spread her wings when she began leaving the landfill site and flying to areas east and south of Edmonton. He thought the falcon named Val was perhaps ripe to establish her own territory and eventually even find a mate to help replenish the endangered species. Schwartze 25 a native of the Toronto area hoped that Val would adapt easily to life back in the wild now that she’s experienced at hunting and killing gulls. “The only difference when she kills a gull or a pigeon is that there won’t be a guy in a hard hat to pick her up and take her home at the end of the day” he said.

Blane Klemek column: House sparrows are here to stay
Bemidji Pioneer
Some of the birds hopped up onto such places as the vehicle?s axles and tie-rods where they were better able to reach insects and other tidbits that they evidently were searching for. A few birds momentarily disappeared further up underneath the hood while other sparrows flew onto the bumper and picked and probed at insects stuck against the grill. I even observed one bird drinking liquid that had leaked onto the pavement. ?Such are the lives of city wildlife? I thought. Indeed the lives of urban wildlife are often much different from those of their rural relatives. In some cases life in town might be easier than life in the countryside. That said not all creatures would survive in our towns and cities but on the other hand many do quite well in urban settings.

Jessica Quintana was just leaving her apartment with her three year old daughter when she first noticed a bird in distress. “I heard a bird squawking and thought he might have a broken wing. I went over to him and saw he was suffering” she said. “I turned around and there were dying birds everywhere. It gives me goose bumps.

Instead the pigeon spent most of the week at Susan Thompson’s farm in Prosser Brook about 30 kilometres south of Moncton. Thompson discovered the pigeon outside her kitchen door on Sunday during Hurricane Bill. Thompson tried releasing the bird on Tuesday but it came back. So she tried again Wednesday afternoon and hasn?t seen the bird since.

He really needs a special diet of fruit and vegetables but anything like some bird seed porridge oats cereal digestive biscuits even bread would help him. “Because of the terrible wind and rain we’ve had we are worried in case he has been blown slightly north east.

The BirdXPeller PR was created about 15 years ago by Bird-X as a single species repellant according to David Kogan the company?s marketing director. ?But over the years we?ve upgraded it by adding seven more different bird repellant noises ? the cries and calls of pigeons starlings and other pest birds and bird predators. And we?ve added electronic noises as well. ? Kogan explains that Bird-X research and development studies found that birds react more to bird distress cries and predator noises than from the blasts of shotguns. ?The whole idea was to create a behavior modifcation tool that doesn?t harm birds but rather scares them away. ur company?s philosophy is to take a humane approach to pest bird abatement rather than to kill them.
Related from Tianjigh: Next Generation of Aviation Safety Bird Strike Radar Systems …

The Humane Society of the United States says that typically 10 percent of birds manage to escape 20 percent are killed outright and 70 percent are wounded and later die. Some pigeon-shoot supporters have tried to tie the practice to hunting. But real hunters know shooting a bird from a launch or one that is tethered isn’t real hunting. Bills have been introduced by Reps. Eugene DePasquale (D-York) and John Maher (R-Allegheny) and in the Senate by Sen. Patrick Browne (R-Lehigh).
Related from Z1067fm: Guns on Campus: Bills would allow guns at college

Following on from Brussels we found ourselves back at Newbury with 1264 Pigeons being liberated at 12:05 into a Northerly wind. The leading birds were expected to be at the southern end of the federation which proved to be the case with Kenfig Hills Dave Gore clocking 2 pigeons within a minute to take 1st and 2nd federation. The fed winning pigeon is a yearling cock that had flown consistently early on in the year before coming back from Folkestone with a bump it was left to recover and paid Dave’s patience back by topping the fed.

Holding up a pigeon with a leg band stamped No. 118 Schrank patted the bird’s gray feathers and pointed out the nice pink breast. "This one is a good flier. I’m always hoping they do well" he said. Because owners’ lofts are scattered around southeastern Wisconsin the first bird home doesn’t necessarily win.

In 2008 a consulting firm suggested netting as one of the most effective ways to keep birds from roosting in areas where they’re not wanted.
Related from Cnurology: Retired urologist selling Santa Monica condo for over $1M

City officials said they believe that installing the net and thereby eliminating the roosting sites beneath the pier will reduce bacteria pollution caused from pigeon feces. A consultant hired last year to evaluate various projects that would keep bacteria levels below the board's requirements identified netting as the most effective solution for deterring birds.

The droppings are suspected to be the cause of bacterial pollution. A consulting firm last year indicated that netting would be an effective way to keep the pigeons from roosting under the pier. Bird Busters offered to do the job for about $108000. ——— Information from: Los Angeles TimesAdvertisement yld_mgr.

For instance people hear relative pitch which can be a tone in one octave and but they still know the tune in a different octave. Birds cannot do this!A bird has a small hole on each side of its head for ears that are covered with “auricular feathers. ” These feathers protect the ear opening reflect sounds and funnel sounds toward the opening. We all know what high winds do to a microphone outdoors but this excess noise isn’t a problem for birds since the special feathers cut down on wind noise. In case you ever wondered the “horns” on the horned owl are only ornamental and the little holes on the sides of its head are the real ears. In fact most owls have asymmetrical ears which means one ear is high and the other is low making their hearing even more acute than that of birds with symmetrical ears.
Related from Pvandv: A Toast to the Triangle

She fishedyour work Pliers out of her handbag and fumbled through it as sheshouted. I tried to figure out what was wrong but she just kept saying she’dfound it and that the Pliers were this very bird. Elisa could you please tell the story yourself? That’sright Jakarta the bird the pliers. Later I realized they’re all one. I’ve reread the end ofthe story several times. Which part? Precisely from the place where the femalebird is cut off from its flock the migrating flock.
