The bird’s handler Steve Schwartze who owns Falcon Ecosystem Solutions based in Lethbridge Alta. said he realized the time had come for the bird to really spread her wings when she began leaving the landfill site and flying to areas east and south of Edmonton. He thought the falcon named Val was perhaps ripe to establish her own territory and eventually even find a mate to help replenish the endangered species. Schwartze 25 a native of the Toronto area hoped that Val would adapt easily to life back in the wild now that she’s experienced at hunting and killing gulls. “The only difference when she kills a gull or a pigeon is that there won’t be a guy in a hard hat to pick her up and take her home at the end of the day” he said.

Martin Tyner of the Southwest Wildlife Foundation in Cedar City says the ferruginous hawk has a healthy population in southern Utah but this bird had been orphaned and was struggling to survive on its own. Tyner says the hawk was suffering from malnutrition when he adopted it two months ago. He says he fed the bird smaller prey like pigeons while housing it in a rehabilitation pen during its recovery. The fed winning pigeon is a yearling cock that had flown consistently early on in the year before coming back from Folkestone with a bump it was left to recover and paid Dave’s patience back by topping the fed.

Beautiful butterflies are the fringe benefits of creating a diverse and rich habitat. Nobody really knows how many U. bird watchers and feeders there are. The only big study was done in conjunction with the last census. That study estimated 65 million identified themselves as bird watchers.

City officials said they believe that installing the net and thereby eliminating the roosting sites beneath the pier will reduce bacteria pollution caused from pigeon feces. A consultant hired last year to evaluate various projects that would keep bacteria levels below the board's requirements identified netting as the most effective solution for deterring birds.
